School Admission Age

Right age for the class?

In short

School admission is decided by a child's age as on a cut-off date, commonly 31 March. Enter the child's date of birth, the cut-off and the class, and this calculator returns the exact age and whether it meets that class's age band, plus the best-fit class for the age.

Admission Eligibility

Age as on 31 March

Many schools use 31 March or 1 April of the admission year.

Is your child the right age for the class?

Schools admit children by their age as on a cut-off date — for Kendriya Vidyalayas and many others this is 31 March of the year admission is sought. This calculator finds the child's exact age on that date and checks it against the age band for the class you're applying for.

A common rule of thumb is that the minimum age for Class I is 6 years, with each higher class adding a year. This tool uses that pattern (minimum = class + 5, upper limit two years above) and also tells you which class the child's age best fits.

Note: Exact age bands, and relaxations for SC/ST/PwD children, vary by school and change year to year. Always confirm against the current admission guidelines.

Why the cut-off date matters

Two children born in the same year can fall on opposite sides of a class boundary depending on their birth month, because eligibility is fixed to the cut-off date, not the calendar year. Getting the exact age on that date removes the guesswork.
