How Many Years

Years between two dates

In short

The number of years between two dates is the exact span in years, months and days, or as a decimal. Enter two dates and this calculator returns both the precise years-months-days breakdown and a decimal-years figure, using the mean Gregorian year, for anniversaries, tenure and averages.

Years Between

Exact and decimal years

How many years between two dates?

Enter two dates and this calculator gives the gap in years — as a precise years, months and days figure, as a decimal number of years, and as total months, weeks and days. It answers questions like “how many years ago was this?” and “how many years until then?”.

The order of the dates doesn't matter; the tool measures the distance between them. Because it uses the real calendar, leap years and different month lengths are handled automatically.

Example: From 1 January 2000 to 1 July 2026 is 26 years and 6 months, or about 26.5 years.

Whole years versus exact years

“How many years” can mean completed whole years or an exact figure with the leftover months and days. This calculator shows both, so you can use whichever the situation needs — completed years for anniversaries and eligibility, the decimal for averages and rates.

Where a years count matters

Whole years drive a surprising number of real decisions: work anniversaries and years of service, long-service or vesting milestones, citizenship and residency thresholds, warranty windows, and school or sports cohorts. For anything financial — average annual growth, interest or depreciation — the decimal-years figure is the one to use, because it expresses the exact fraction of a year rather than rounding to a whole number. Having both the exact years-months-days breakdown and the decimal value means you can pick whichever the situation calls for.
